![]() ![]() ![]() Simone’s journey of self-reflection is echoed in other subplots involving the younger characters, like Damon trying to gel with the teammates who are understandably less than thrilled at the constant reminders he gave up the majors for them, or their RA Keisha (Netta Walker) working up the courage to inform her dad she’s switching majors from premed to dance. During the worst of her stress, Simone takes her aunt’s advice to “point to examples of Black excellence and see what is possible,” taking inspiration from the real HBCU alums whose portraits hang in the hallways, like Their Eyes Were Watching God author Zora Neale Hurston. That all of this is happening against the backdrop of an HBCU adds another layer of depth. Though Simone works to maintain a cool and composed façade, Maya lets her anxiety show in subtle facial expressions that grow gradually more drawn. Her challenges are built not from dramatic developments but from the compounding burdens of relatively minor setbacks - a housing snafu, a disappointing practice, a keen bout of homesickness. ![]() The most prominent and most emotionally resonant arc in the first four hourlong episodes sent to critics concerns Simone’s struggles to adjust. Homecoming‘s sprawling cast allows it to approach the college experience from all angles, some inevitably more compelling than others. That Simone and Damon, dormmates and fast friends, are headed toward romance seems inevitable, even if Simon’s technically still attached to her All American boyfriend Jordan (Michael Evans Behling) what’s more college than gradually letting go of the high-school sweetheart in favor of the cutie who lives just down the hall? In the meantime, the two leads balance academics, athletics and the squishier project of self-discovery with the help of new friends and adult mentors, and in defiance of unfriendly teammates or disapproving parental figures. Also new to campus is Damon (Peyton Alex Smith), a charismatic baseball phenom who, to his mother’s profound irritation, has deferred his plans to go pro in favor of enrolling at Bringston and helping the school’s team rebuild under coach Marcus (Cory Hardrict) after a fake-class scandal derailed their last season. The most pertinent details: Simone is an ambitious tennis player from Beverly Hills starting her freshman year at Bringston, a historically Black university in Atlanta, with support from her journalism-professor aunt Amara (Kelly Jenrette) but against the wishes of her Ivy League-obsessed parents. The network renewed the All American mothership (for Season 6), Walker (for Season 4) and Superman & Lois (for Season 4), but Walker Independence, Kung Fu, The Winchesters and Gotham Knights have all been cancelled.Cast: Geffri Maya, Peyton Alex Smith, Kelly Jenrette, Cory Hardrict, Sylvester Powell, Camille Hyde, Mitchell Edwards, Netta WalkerĮxecutive producers: Nkechi Okoro Carroll, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, David Madden, Robbie Rogers Homecoming‘s renewal comes amid a major overhaul of The CW’s lineup, in the wake of its acquisition by Nexstar Media Group. ![]() The Season 2 finale left viewers on quite the romantic cliffhanger: Simone finally decided between her two suitors, Damon and Lando, but viewers didn’t get to see who she was speaking to when she declared, “I know who I want. The cast also includes Kelly Jenrette, Cory Hardrict, Sylvester Powell, Camille Hyde, Netta Walker, Mitchell Edwards and Rhoyle Ivy King. Set at Atlanta’s fictional Bringston University, All American: Homecoming centers on Simone Hicks (Geffri Maya) and Damon Sims (Peyton Alex Smith) as they try to balance social lives and academics with their respective pursuits of professional tennis and baseball. Television and Berlanti Productions for their continued collaboration, and we cannot wait to get started on the new seasons.” We are grateful to our partners at Warner Bros. “These series are two of our strongest performers across our linear and digital platforms with some of the most passionate fanbases in all of television. “We are thrilled to bring All American: Homecoming and Superman & Lois back to The CW,” the network’s President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz said in a statement. Of course, identifying as Latina/o is not synonymous with speaking Spanish, and language loss has occurred among second- and third-generation Cuban Americans. In 2010, more than 65% of the population of Miami-Dade County identified as Hispanic or Latina/o, and in the large municipalities of Doral and Hialeah, the figure is 80% and 95%, respectively. Today, the vast majority of the population is bilingual. In the years following the revolution, hundreds of thousands of Cubans left the island nation for South Florida, setting the stage for what would become one of the most important linguistic convergences in all of the Americas. Spanish meets English in Miamiįast forward to today, where a similar form of language contact involving Spanish and English has been going on in Miami since the end of the Cuban Revolution in 1959. Words that today seem basic, even fundamental, to English vocabulary were, just 800 years ago, borrowed from French: prince, government, administer, liberty, court, prayer, judge, justice, literature, music, poetry, to name just a few. Soon thereafter, a French-speaking ruling class replaced the English-speaking aristocracy, and for roughly 200 years, the elites of England – including the kings – did their business in French.Įnglish never really caught on with the aristocracy, but since servants and the middle classes needed to communicate with aristocrats – and with people of different classes intermarrying – French words trickled down the class hierarchy and into the language.ĭuring this period, more than 10,000 loanwords from French entered the English language, mostly in domains where the aristocracy held sway: the arts, military, medicine, law and religion. In 1066, the Norman French, led by William the Conqueror, invaded England in an event now known as “ the Norman Conquest.” ![]() One bilingual confluence famously changed the trajectory of the English language. When the contact takes place over an extended period of time – decades, generations or longer – the structures of the languages in question may begin to influence one another, and the speakers can begin to share each other’s vocabulary. This can happen when certain events – war, colonialism, political exile, immigration and climate change – put speakers of different language groups into contact with one another. That’s no small feat, my friends.Jurassic World is a theme introduced by LEGO in conjunction with the release of the Jurassic World movie in 2015. ![]() Jurassic Park may have a simple design, but boy, oh boy, is it a tough act to follow! Let’s give credit where it’s due - Spielberg is a cinematic force like no other with enough Hollywood clout to make movies without pesky studio interference. You’d think someone else would have cracked the code by now!Īlas, every new attempt to capture that Spielberg enchantment only serves to magnify the maestro’s legacy. But seriously, folks, it’s been years since Jurassic Park roared into our lives in June of ’93. You could also argue that Super 8 and Stranger Things fall within the Jurassic genre - slow-burn thrillers designed to captivate the masses. Why? Well, mainly because it shamelessly pilfers from Spielberg’s playbook. If we were to pick the closest cousin to Jurassic Park, it’d probably be Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla. The joy, wonder, and excitement that once thrived in the Jurassic series have long since vanished, leaving us yearning for the magic of the original film. Jurassic World: Dominion, with all its flashy stunts and cutting-edge effects, feels hollow and artificial. Where other dinosaur epics try too hard and end up a convoluted mess (looking at you, Jurassic World), others lean heavily on the gore factor for kicks, or simply fall into the pit of mind-numbing stupidity. It’s the perfect epic for the whole family, and it represents the pinnacle of Spielberg mania, a time when every summer seemed to offer up a PG-13 thrill ride that left everyone grinning from ear to ear. It’s this delicate balance that makes Jurassic Park a hard-hitting adventure for both adults and youngsters alike. When all Hell breaks loose, Spielberg unleashes the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex on our hapless heroes, and crafts this magnificent sequence: The first hour teases us with glimpses of the park’s razor-toothed residents, carefully building anticipation. In this dino park, less is definitely more. Sure, there are a few dated bits here and there (remember those clunky computers and ancient CD-ROMs?), but overall, the film has an undeniably modern look and feel, even as Spielberg follows an old-school mantra that keeps us in suspense, waiting for the thrills to unfold rather than bombarding us with non-stop CGI mayhem. This isn’t merely nostalgia clouding our judgment Jurassic Park rocks. Sure, it’s a basic bunch, but hey, it works!Īnd work it does, people! Jurassic Park stands tall as a colossal triumph, casting a shadow over the majority of summer releases. And of course, we’ve got a pair of wide-eyed, scream-prone kids, Lex and Tim (played by Arian Richards and Joseph Mazzello, respectively), who are just along for the dino-filled ride. Ian Malcolm ( Jeff Goldblum), who’s as quirky as they come. Ellie Sattler ( Laura Dern), who has a flair for the dramatic, eccentric mathematician, Dr. Then there’s the passionate paleobotanist, Dr. We’ve got the soft spoken paleontologist, Dr. It spends mere minutes debating the ethical conundrums of cloning, throws in a group of stock characters, and then unleashes them into the wild to tussle with dinosaurs.Ĭharacters are straightforward but memorable. Yet, if we’re being honest, the story itself, based on Michael Crichton’s novel, is rather straightforward. It’s jam-packed with suspense, mind-blowing effects, and jaw-dropping action. The sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, left much to be desired, and the subsequent Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World trilogy couldn’t quite muster up the same staying power.īut what exactly made Jurassic Park a roaring success? Even after all these years, it remains the apex predator among dinosaur movies - a true titan of the genre. From Disney’s animated flick Dinosaur, which received mixed reviews and tepid audience reactions, to forgettable bottom-of-the-barrel B-movies like Carnosaur, there’s no shortage of poorly made dinosaur adventures for audiences to consume.Įven the great Spielberg stumbled in his attempts to recapture the awe-inspiring grandeur of Jurassic Park. Why on Earth are dinosaur movies so darn tricky to pull off? Ever since 1993, when Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park stormed onto the silver screen, we’ve witnessed a menagerie of dino adventures, but few have truly hit the mark. ![]() ![]() ![]() Rounding Out the Top 10īeyond these five outstanding performances, several other players have cracked the top 10 for most fantasy points in a game in amazing fashion. Although the Bengals were already eliminated from the playoffs, it showed what Dillon could do as one of the elite running backs of the late 1990s. During the game, Dillon tore up the Oilers’ defense for 246 rushing yards, 4 TDs, and 30 receiving yards. Let’s call it another oldie but a goodie - Corey Dillon’s 51.6-point game for the Bengals against the not-so-awesomely named Tennessee Oilers in 1997. If you were playing in 1990, maybe your next goal should be mastering a superflex league. The only major downfall of Rice’s achievement is that fantasy football was still in its infancy. It set the record for most fantasy points in a game for a wide receiver by a long shot - only Tyreek Hill’s 44.9-point performance in 2020 has come close since. While many wide receivers can boast some ridiculous stats, Rice’s Week 6 performance of the 1990 season was beyond absurd.ĭuring a game against the Atlanta Falcons, the San Francisco 49ers wideout hauled in 5 TDs for 255 yards on 10 receptions. The lone wide receiver to crack the top five, and more specifically, the top 10, is none other than Flash 80 himself - Jerry Rice. With 231 total yards dispersed somewhat evenly, Alexander foreshadowed his greatness in the NFL, which culminated with an MVP during the 2005 season. When the final whistle blew, Alexander had: During the game, Alexander was clearly dialed in, showcasing both his rushing prowess and soft receiving hands. Shaun Alexander, RB - 53.1 Pointsįinishing just a tenth of a point behind Kamara, Alexander lit up the once-again, defensively hapless Vikings on September 29, 2002. We can only hope you had him in the starting lineup, or at least in the flex spot. To go along with six touchdowns, Kamara also had 155 rushing yards and 17 receiving yards, cementing his game as one of the best ever played - at least in a fantasy football sense. Louis Browns pitcher - you read that right - Ernie Nevers in 1929. During a 52-33 win against the Minnesota Vikings, Kamara valiantly paraded through the Vikes’ defense for an NFL record-tying six touchdowns - a feat previously held for almost 100 years by Chicago Cardinals fullback and St. On Christmas Day of 2020, New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara nearly eclipsed Portis for the most fantasy points in a game. If so, you may have wanted to quit the league, and rightfully so. If you were one of the OGs of online fantasy football, hopefully, you weren’t on the losing side of Portis’ absolute dominance. With 254 total yards and 5 TDs, this Week 14 performance is widely regarded as one of the most complete rushing performances in the history of the NFL. 5 touchdowns, including three within a 10-minute stretch. To accumulate such a tally, Portis had an absolutely insane day out of the backfield, tallying: On December 7, 2003, Portis put up 55.4 points for the Denver Broncos against the Kansas City Chiefs en route to a 45-27 victory. The most fantasy points in a game might not be a household name, but nevertheless, a solid running back by all accounts. Interesting tidbit: Newspapers and enthusiasts have offered fantasy football leagues since the early 1960s, either through mail-in cards or in-person bar/venue events. For the sake of modernity, we’re only going back to 1989 as that was around the time that fantasy football became widely playable across the United States. Note: For the sake of even comparisons, these players scored the most fantasy points in a game based on standard scoring - not PPR scoring (points per reception) - which favors wide receivers and tight ends (to a lesser extent) - more than any other position. ![]() Or, perhaps you’re just a fan of advanced metrics. In either case, you’ve probably developed a healthy love or senseless personal hate for the player just because of a single game. You may have been on the receiving end of a fantasy football breakout performance, or maybe you were on the lucky side. ![]() |
